Introduction

Celebrity, when we think of this word we would usually associate it with those on television, radio and the big screen. The people who entertain us on a day to day basis by being the characters we love, keeping us in the know on current affairs and providing us with knowledge on things around us. By definition they are “A famous person, especially in entertainment or sport” or “The state of being well known”(Oxford Dictionary.) Or at least that is what we used to think, but now in our current growing society we are moving online. Almost everything we do is on social media and some even video their lives and things they love for fun. What makes this interesting is that it is in fact making people famous. It is their career to film themselves going shopping, doing fun challenges, showing people how to do make up, bake and even show you what they carry around in their handbag. For some it is an ordinary day to come home from work or school and watch these videos for hours and for some it makes no sense at all.

What I will be hoping to discover is who are they and what do they do? Why are these people so loved? Why do people become almost obsessed with these peoples lives? And how are they becoming more relevant than some of our biggest celebrities?

I will be basing my research and analysis around one of these online stars in particular due to their overwhelming fan base and growth across not just the internet but into our stores and homes. A girl named Zoe Sugg from a rural town in England one day thought it would be fun to write a beauty blog and record videos of herself talking about make-up and her life on YouTube, she is now one of the most famous people in the world with over 7 million subscribers to her channel, and is now more formerly known as Zoella. Majority of people find this hard to fathom and question why their teenagers or even themselves are so interested in the videos and blogs she posts.
